Because Apple has managed to dominate the tablet industry so completely over the past two years, all the rest of the electronics designers have had to develop creative workarounds for staying competitive in the tablet marketplace. Some companies, like HP, have released several generations of tablets to the market with next to no success; they are low-quality, low-featured, and overpriced. But HP’s plan has been to simply get their foot in the door of the tablet computer market segment.

Similarly, manufacturers have had some difficulty in getting Android-powered tablets to really take off. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is probably the most high-profile competitor to the iPad, but it still pales in comparison when it comes to market share, mainly due to the fact that no other company has managed to build a tablet that gives the same level of features and quality for the price as the iPad. The iPad isn’t cheap, but it is value-=priced for what you get.

So, competitors have tried to undercut the iPad by developing new sub-$500 tablets that give consumers a much lower price point into the tablet world. The most popular of these are Amazon’s Kindle, the Nook to a lesser degree. Both of these devices are a more lo-fi, stripped down tablet experience, and for Amazon, the initial idea of the Kindle was to create a vehicle for launching a new

revenue stream in their sprawling ebook initiative. But the Kindle has grown into perhaps the most viable alternative to the iPad: while it doesn’t offer the features, it’s incredibly affordable.

And yet, a recent study indicates that a large majority of Kindle users are actually preparing to buy the “iPad 3,” even if it turns out to be more expensive than the iPad 2!

According to a survey in the respected Tampa Bay Business Journal, 71% of Kindle users are actually planning to purchase the next iPad. For Amazon, this certainly cannot be good news, and it indicates that, while the Kindle was a short-term success in the tablet sector, its interest may already be waning.

Even more impressive is the fact that, in spite of the fact that the third-generation iPad’s price is expected to rise, a survey from SlashGear indicates that consumers don’t even care what the next iPad will cost! They said the following: “In a survey run by SlashGear, meanwhile, half of those expressing a strong intention on buying the next-gen iPad – expected to be unveiled in early March – said they planned to do so without consideration of either price or specifications.”

While it is hard to imagine the iPad gaining even more market dominance in 2012, given the fact so many tablet users are set to buy into this year’s iteration, 2012 is shaping up to be Apple’s biggest year yet for iPad sales.
