When the iPhone originally came out (as well as other smartphones), the data usage offered by carriers was unlimited. This has remained the same for years, as each new iPhone is presented. Until now. Suddenly, major carriers of iPhones, such as AT&T and Verizon, are beginning to offer tiered data plans for new customers. With the average user of an iPhone using approximately 30MB of usage per month now, this ultimately results in a higher cost for the user. The new buyer without knowledge may believe that the data amount offered in a plan sounds like plenty, and then be shocked at their first bill in which they went over their usage and were charged an outrageous amount of money for extra usage.

The lesson for iPhone users? For now, stay with the company you currently have and the unlimited plan they are forced to continue to provide. Just as you are penalized for early termination of a contract, they cannot withdraw an unlimited plan for you if it already exists. If you switch from one company to another for any reason – a lack of good customer service, bad reception, or any other reason – you may find yourself trapped in a tiered plan that ultimately costs much more than you are accustomed to paying. Previously we have seen that Apple release a new model of the iPhone every year, thus, that made many believe that the iPhone 5 was due this year. But by releasing the iPhone 4S, we have seen that Apple has dropped their previously used schedule. This does come with hope that we may not have to wait until late next year for the new iPhone 5. We already know that it has been confirmed that it is in the works. Apple stated that this is the last project that Steve Jobs worked on. However, beyond that Apple has not stated much about the 5th generation.

Now that we do know that the iPhone 5 is in the works, let’s take a look at the rumors surrounding the project.

One of the rumors is that they are dropping the so called “gorilla glass” that is currently used and use a much more shatter-proof kind. They will also feature an OLED screen, according to the rumors. However, some are also reporting that the iPhone 5 was supposed to come out, but was dropped even when Steve did not approve. They released that rumor despite Apple confirming that the iPhone 5 is in the actual works. Another rumor reports that we will finally see the 5th iPhone come out in January. This might be a valid rumor, but only time will confirm or deny it. But perhaps the biggest rumor is the one about Apple doing a full overhaul of the iPhones and iPads.

A source who claims to be an insider says that next year in 2012, Apple will being doing an overhaul of their entire collection of best selling items. This of course includes the beloved iPhone. While Apple has not stated anything along these lines, some can say historically we have seen this happen within them before. With the iPhone 3GS release being followed by a revamped iPhone line.

So this appears that out of all the rumors, this one could be the most valid. But as we all know that with the Apple, anything is possible and nothing is official until they announce it. Leaving with that thought, we can say that this will give iPhone accessories manufactures and stores a chance to get their thoughts together for the next generation of iPhone accessories.

U-Feel Dots Series for iPhone 4 / 4S

iPhone case designers were overjoyed that Apple decided to re-use the iPhone 4 form factor on the iPhone 4S. But a slight tweak to the ambient sensor has forced some case designers to adjust their iPhone 4S case designs.

Consumers shouldn’t expect to see a wide range of new iPhone 4S cases anytime soon. That’s because the same iPhone 4 cases that have permeated the consumer electronics accessories market over the past year and a half work just as well on the iPhone 4S. Chances are, case designers will simply be sticking “iPhone 4S” stickers on iPhone 4 case boxes and enjoying the fact that they don’t have to make any special adjustments.

But a recent report from MacRumors suggests that a slight change in the iPhone 4S’s light sensor may affect some iPhone 4S case designs.

According to the article: “. . . the ambient light sensor or ALS has moved to the left several millimeters . . . That created a problem for many rugged cases that covered more of the front of the iPhone: instead of peeking out through a hole cut into the case, the sensor was now hidden behind the case.” This is a big problem for iPhone 4S users, since a covered sensor makes the iPhone 4S think that it is constantly in the dark, affecting the brightness and contrast of the screen.

In addition, there has also been a slight change in the position of the mute button on the iPhone 4S that could conflict with older iPhone 4 cases: “The CDMA iPhone 4 moved the mute switch slightly lower to make room for the upper left antenna. Some cases from the GSM iPhone 4 don’t allow access to the moved mute switch. The iPhone 4S has the mute switch in the same location as the CDMA iPhone 4 and thus some early iPhone 4 cases prevent easy access to the mute switch as well.”

Interestingly enough, UNIEA’s iPhone 4 cases have taken the CDMA design elements into consideration, and as a result, the entire line of UNIEA iPhone 4 cases double as perfect-fit iPhone 4S cases as well.

Anticipating the possibility that Apple would re-use the iPhone 4 form factor, the general design of UNIEA’s iPhone cases include a capacious cutout for the control switches on the iPhone, which allows them to accommodate slight shifts in the design and placement of the iPhone’s side panel buttons and switches. For this reason, all of UNIEA’s iPhone 4S cases work flawlessly with the new design.

For that, Apple gave some preliminary concepts of the new iCloud.

The new Operating Systems are fine, but updates to existing software are almost always hit or miss. They have never been the meat or the potatoes of what excites a Mac user. The software updates will fix some problems, create some others, and have an engaging new look, that will make most people feel like it’s just more of the same. There isn’t anything hot, new, or sexy about it.
iCloud is where the new, hot, and sexy are being infused into Apple’s lineup.

What it is

It is possible there are those that haven’t been privy to the iCloud. What it is is an offering from the Cupertino company that may very well change the way music is distributed, stored, and played. Just like Napster came on the scene with a whole new way to share music, iTunes took the idea and made it viable for all users, as well as legal (for people that like listening to music without G-Men kicking in doors with search warrants). The buzz around iCloud is that it is supposed to replace not just the MobileMe application for mobile mp3 devices, but the whole iTunes idea. Where MobileMe allowed storage on a remote server, called an iDisk, the new iCloud is looking to make a perfect storm for both mobile users as well as home users.

How it Works

iCloud would be both a fully mobile streaming music service, as well as a remote storage that could be accessed from anywhere. There would be no shopping and buying through iTunes and then storing the files on the iDisk to be accessed through MobileMe. Instead, iCloud would be the single place for all of these actions. A song could be selected, downloaded, and then stored all via iCloud. It would automatically go into your library the minute it downloads, where it could be accessed. No functionality between MobileMe and the iDisk to iPhone or iPad. iCloud would replace all of them as a fully online streaming music community where storage interfaces with shopping which all works with downloading.

New, Hot, and Sexy

The really amazing part of the iCloud is that it automatically updates to any device that uses it. Everyone with an iPod has seen the little message “Synching iPod, please do not disconnect” usually as they are trying to get their podcast fix for the day downloaded before they have to run out of the door. The iCloud doesn’t tether the mobile device to the computer any longer. iCloud would update in real time both to the computer and to the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. No more plugging and synching. iCloud handles everything without plugging and playing, but right over the network for both devices. If it is in iCloud, it is everywhere you are. Always synching so there is no guesswork. It looks the same across mediums and across platforms.
Apple’s ingenuity in this case isn’t quite as far ahead of their time as other mediums. Google and Amazon have proposed similar concepts, but there has been some doubt as to their ability to have either the user base, as well as the cross-platform accessibility that Apple has already worked so hard to create. Apple has heard the complaints of its users loud and clear and they have answered with vigor, trying to bring together the parts of MobileMe, online storage, streaming media, and mobile technology into a single program with Apple’s patented friendly usability. Will it succeed? Only the unveiling at the WWDC will be able to answer that question.
